DeKalb County police have charged a man in connection with last week's road rage shooting on U.S. 78.
Authorities announced Wednesday 21-year-old Jose Dionicio Ovalles was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and weapons offenses for his alleged actions during the Oct. 12 incident, in which shots were fired at Angelina Christiano and her son as they drove westbound near Mountain Industrial Boulevard.
Christiano was shot in the upper back and originally rushed to the hospital in serious condition. She survived her injuries, DeKalb police Capt. F.P. Braun said Wednesday. Her 25-year-old son was not injured.
According to previous reports, Christiano was driving her Corvette on U.S. 78 when a Ford Mustang pulled up close behind them in the center lane. She reportedly motioned for the Mustang to go around, but the suspect fired multiple shots and drove off.
Ovalles was arrested the day after the shooting on unrelated charges. Braun said Ovalles was picked up on a theft by taking warrant issued out by DeKalb police’s auto theft unit, and the new charges were a product of that team’s work with the department’s assault unit.
It was unclear if the Mustang driven during the shooting was believed to be stolen.
Ovalles is being held without bond. Braun said he has declined to speak with detectives about the shooting.
“It leaves a lot of questions that we still have to answer,” Braun said.
