A high school student was arrested in Athens on Wednesday after he was found with a loaded gun that authorities later linked to two drive-by shootings, police said.

The 15-year-old student, who was not named by police, faces two counts of aggravated assault in addition to a charge of possessing a gun on school grounds. He was taken into custody at Cedar Shoals High School.

According to Athens-Clarke County police, the student was reported to school officials about 2 p.m. Police worked with the school resource officer to find the boy and recover the gun.

“Further investigation found that the firearm was stolen from a recent entering auto incident and also was used in two drive-by shooting incidents at a Martin Court residence,” Athens-Clarke County police spokesman Geof Gilland said in a news release.

Details about those incidents have not been released.

The student is being held in the Gainesville Regional Youth Detention Center.
