Two people were shot Monday night near Piedmont Avenue and the Georgia State University commons, Atlanta police said.

GSU Deputy Police Chief Carlton Mullis said the two people were shot outside the Piedmont North residence hall, but inside the fence line in a possible robbery.

“We’re still trying to figure out exactly what happened and who was involved,” Mullis said shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Cameron Buyers, a freshman at GSU, said he heard people arguing when he was walking back toward the residence hall after class, at about 9:30 p.m.

“I thought it was just regular stuff,” Buyers said. “And then I heard a gunshot.”

When Buyers turned around to see what was going on, he said he saw scuffling and went inside because he thought it was a gunshot.

He said he thought a second shooting took place by the commons, but that the people responsible were caught and the victims were taken to the hospital.

Mullis said both people who were shot were taken to the hospital, but Mullis could only confirm one person was alert, conscious and breathing. Two others were taken away in handcuffs, he said.

Buyers said he usually felt safe on campus, but he was shaken up.

“I’m nervous,” he said. “I’m not used to this.”
