A man pulled over in Johns Creek for not wearing his seat belt ended up in the hospital after allegedly getting combative with officers, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Paul Matas, 58, refused to stop when officers tried pulling him over on Jones Bridge Road last Wednesday, Johns Creek police spokesman Tyler Seymour told AJC.com.
Dashboard footage shows the man running from police, and a pursuit ensued until officers boxed in Matas’ vehicle, authorities said.
But when police approached the man’s car, Matas became angry.
“I’ll shoot you,” he can be heard yelling at officers in a video obtained by Channel 2.
“When they approached the vehicle, the gentleman was screaming, harassing the officers, threatening that he was going to shoot them in the face,” Seymour said. “He alluded that he did have a firearm in the car with a rifle and that he was not afraid to use it.”
Matas’ remarks put officers on edge. When Matas continued, police broke his car window and used a Taser to stun him, Channel 2 reported.
Officers did not find a firearm in his vehicle, but they did find a machete.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he underwent a mental health evaluation. He’s being treated at a different local facility, Seymour told AJC.com.
Once he is released, Matas will be charged with driving under the influence and obstruction of justice, police said.
