A registered sex offender is in jail after Cherokee County investigators said he chatted online with someone he thought was a 13-year-old girl.
Howard Thomas Porter, 52, of Marietta, was arrested Monday on multiple charges following an undercover investigation that started in early September, Cherokee sheriff’s office spokesman Jay Baker said Tuesday in a news release.
The recipient of the messages was a Cherokee sheriff’s detective, not a teen girl, according to authorities.
Porter was convicted of distribution of child pornography in New York in 2003, according to the GBI Sex Offender Registry. He was added to Georgia’s registry in November 2014.
Following Monday’s arrest in Cobb County, Porter was booked into the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center on three counts of obscene contact with a minor, six counts of sexual exploitation of a child and three counts of using a computer to solicit a child for indecent acts.
He remains there in lieu of $33,750 bond.
