A 17-year-old man faces assault charges after allegedly pistol whipping a man March 8 outside a Sandy Springs apartment, police said.

When Landon Flemming heard screaming outside his Colquitt Road apartment, he went outside and saw a 5-foot-8-inch tall, skinny man running with a gun away from the breezeway, according to a police report.

Zachary Michuki was slumped down, bleeding from the head, with his back leaning against his doorframe when police arrived, according to the report. His wife held a towel on top of his head as blood ran down his head and face and onto his chest.

Michuki said he was trying to unlock his door shortly before 11 p.m., when a man came up behind him and started yelling at him to give him his car keys. He had a black gun in his hand, according to the report.

When he started yelling out of fear, Michuki said he through he startled the gunman, who then struck him in the back of the head with the gun and took off – without stealing anything from Michuki.

Emergency medical service workers arrived and treated a large laceration on the back of his head. Police officers chased the suspect, later identified as Elijah Rahmaan.

Officers caught Rahmaan after several brief foot chases near the intersection of Northridge Road and Dunwoody Place, according to the police report.

An officer wrote in the report that he knew the ambulance taking Michuki to the hospital was still nearby, so police stopped the ambulance and asked Michuki if Rahmaan attacked him. He said yes and then continued on to the hospital.

Rahmaan was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and obstruction.
