An Atlanta man recently pleaded guilty to arson after he tried to blow up his ex-wife’s camper in Kansas, authorities said.

Robin F. Hood accepted a plea deal, avoiding an attempted first-degree murder charge for his role in the incident, Cowley County Attorney Larry Schwartz told AJC.com.

Other charges were also dropped as part of the plea deal. His sentencing is scheduled for Monday.

Hood placed three explosive devices made from model rocket engines on the camper before giving it to his ex-wife, who was awarded possession of the camper after their divorce, the Cowley Courier Traveler reported.

The camper was parked at the Winfield Fairgrounds during the Cowley County Fair when the explosive devices were found Aug. 1, 2019. That led to authorities and bomb squads flooding the area in response, the newspaper reported.

The explosives were rigged to detonate when a button was pushed, the newspaper reported, citing court documents. However, they failed to ignite.

Authorities said that no fair attendees were injured.

Hood, who was 47 at the time, was tied to the incident later that day, leading to his arrest, the newspaper reported. Authorities searched his home near Atlanta as part of their investigation.

Winfield is in southeastern Kansas, about 45 miles from Wichita.
