Red Roof Inn security guard allegedly impersonated officer, had previous arrest

The woman's criminal background has some motel guests wondering how she got a job working security.

Sherry Phelps called 911 on New Year’s Day and said she was an Atlanta police officer who wanted to report a crime.

However, not only was she not an officer, but she has an arrest record herself, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Phelps, 53, worked security at a Red Roof Inn in Cobb County through Banneret Security of Decatur, police said.

And she just got out of the Fulton County Jail in May on a  simple battery charge from the previous year, according to the news station.

Now, Phelps is out of a job and charged by Cobb police with impersonating an officer, providing a false date of birth and obstruction of an officer, the news station reported.

Red Roof issued a statement to Channel 2 about the incident.

"This is an ongoing criminal police investigation and Red Roof is fully cooperating with local authorities. We have confirmed with the franchise property that the individual in question is no longer contracted with this franchise location.”
