Police seek gunman who shot at Ga. 400 motorist

Channel 2's Mike Petchenik has some startling statistics on road rage.

Police are looking for the road-rage gunman who they say shot at another motorist on a metro Atlanta freeway.

Matthew Sauve told Channel 2 Action News he was merging onto Georgia 400 from I-285 on Monday night when another motorist cut him off. “There was a car in front of us in the lane to go south, and at the last second he swerved over into our lane and I had to slam on the brakes to miss him,” Sauve said. He honked to let the other driver know he nearly hit him, Channel 2 reported.

“Not long after that I heard four loud pops, sounded like gunshots,” Sauve told the station. “I was confused because I was driving on the road and I see his car, and I see something sticking out of his window, he had really dark tinted windows.”

Sauve told the station that none of the bullets hit him, his car, or his passenger. “[It was] super dangerous. I just feel blessed and lucky everybody was OK, nobody was hurt.” Suave said he pulled over and called police.

Sandy Springs police spokesman Sgt. Ron Momon told Channel 2, “It’s better to let the person go on. If you can get a tag, great, but it’s not worth putting your life at risk.”

Suave said he tried to get a tag number, but decided against it. “I didn’t want to antagonize him any further, didn’t want him to slow down with me and possibly shoot again, so I just pulled off the road and checked my car for any damage,” Suave said. “You never know what people are capable of out there on the streets.”

Police told Channel 2 that the driver was in dark-colored sedan, possibly a Ford Taurus.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Sandy Springs police at (770) 551-6900.
