After he pointed a gun at an officer after a chase, a murder suspect was killed when the officer drove into him with his patrol car, Columbus police said.

Deonte Marces Giles, 22, of Columbus, died of blunt-force trauma Thursday morning, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.

The incident began when police responded to a public housing complex, the newspaper reported. A woman said someone she knew pointed a gun at her, and that person was identified as Giles, a suspect in an April 1 deadly shooting.

Giles drove away with someone in the car and two police cruisers in pursuit, the newspaper reported.

Giles’ car hit one police car, causing it to hit a telephone pole, police said. Giles’ car hit a wired fence.

Giles got out of his car and then pointed a weapon at an officer in the second marked car. The other person in Giles’ car, who was also armed, then left the car, according to police.

“A second (police car) who was responding saw that individual with that gun and ran over the individual that had the weapon to eliminate the threat,” police Chief Ricky Boren said.

The GBI is investigating, Boren said.
