When someone flagged down off-duty Fulton County police officer Bobby Ransom while he was driving Sunday morning, he pulled over to comply. But the person who apparently was seeking help then pulled a gun, forcing the officer to drive and pick up someone else, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The officer then fought off the gunman and escaped on foot along Old Dogwood Road in Roswell, Channel 2 reported. The two other people in the car also ran away, and Roswell police later found the car.

Ransom would not talk to Channel 2 about the case. But Roswell police, who were called to help, did.

“The victim is an off-duty police officer, so hopefully maybe the technique he used to deflect the gun was able to save himself from being harmed,” Roswell police spokeswoman Lisa Holland told the station.

A worker at a nearby fast-food restaurant got involved when Ransom sought help.

Holland said what happened to the officer could happen to anyone.

“Any officer, if someone flagged them down for help, whether on-duty or off-duty, would want to offer their services,” Holland said.
