Atlanta police early Thursday were investigating the overnight shooting death of a man whose body was found dumped in the middle the street, possibly after a carjacking.

Channel 2 Action News reported that police received a 911 call shortly after midnight about a carjacking in the area of Garibaldi and Gardner streets in southwest Atlanta, and when officers arrived, they found the victim dead in the street.

Witnesses told investigators there were five people inside a car when someone inside the car opened fire, shooting the driver.

“The victim was thrown out of the vehicle,” Atlanta police Lt. Charles Hampton told Channel 2. “Another individual fled on foot out of the vehicle.”

The remaining three people drove off in the car, which was described only as a black, four-door sedan,

Police have not released the name of the victim, who was believed to be in his late 20s.

“Hopefully we”ll be able to find the other individual that fled on foot,” Hampton said. “Hopefully, they’ll come forward and let us know exactly what happened.”
