A 19-year-old is accused of using a piece of nail-studded wood to attack a woman before running from officers, causing one to trip and break his thumb, authorities said.
Carlos Monta Ezzard, of Atlanta, faces aggravated assault and felony obstruction charges after his run-in with Marietta police early Sunday morning, according to Cobb County arrest warrants.
About 2 a.m., he began to hit the woman with the broken board, causing her to bleed from her head, the warrants said. The incident took place in the 100 block of Atlanta Street while the woman was in her car. It’s unclear what led up to the alleged attack.
The woman honked the horn of her vehicle, and the suspect unsuccessfully tried to grab items from her car before running away, the warrants said. A witness was able to identify the suspect, allowing officers to find him within an hour.
When confronted by police, Ezzard ran away, and one officer fell and broke his thumb during the chase, the warrants said. The suspect also allegedly hit another officer in the face after being taken into custody.
In addition to the two felonies, Ezzard faces a misdemeanor marijuana charge. As of Friday night, he remained in the Cobb County jail on a $22,220 bond, records show.
