A grand jury in North Georgia has cleared U.S. Marshals in the shooting of a man in April, according to a report.

Thomas Zane Campbell, 31, was shot in Trion, about 90 miles north of Atlanta in Chattooga County, as marshals tried to arrest him, GBI spokesman Greg Ramey said at the time.

“Based upon the facts and the law presented,” the Chattooga County grand jury wrote, “we find there is no basis to seek any criminal charges against any officer in this matter and that the officers were legally justified.”

Campbell was wanted because he went into hiding in the middle of his trial, which continued without him, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

When the marshals arrived, Campbell put a gun under his chin, he later told investigators.

He was found guilty of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, the newspaper reported. Campbell is now in a state prison in Port Wentworth.
