3 officer-involved shootings in Georgia in 30-minute span

Three officer-involved shootings across Georgia, including one that left a man dead, occurred in a 30-minute span Friday afternoon, Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.

Officials worked cases in Carrollton, Forsyth and Macon, but no charges have been filed in any of the shootings.

In Macon, a Bibb County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man who allegedly shoplifted from a Family Dollar store, GBI Special Agent JT Ricketson said.

A description of the man, whose name has not been released, was put out and a deputy later found the man and confronted him, Ricketson said. During a fight, the deputy used his Taser, but the man pulled the prongs off him, Ricketson said. The deputy then used his pepper spray on the man, but he turned his head, grabbed the bottle and sprayed it in the deputy’s face.

With near blinding eyes, the deputy pulled out his gun and shot the man at least twice.

Video of the shooting was streamed to Facebook, Ricketson said, and officials are working to retrieve it. Another video shows the incident from a distance with narration.

The officer was not wearing a body camera and there is no dashcam footage of the incident, Ricketson said. Officials spoke to witnesses who confirmed what happened.

The deputy’s name has not been released.

In Carrollton, U.S. Marshals were attempting to arrest Richard Harden at a home when he pointed a gun at his head and at police, Miles said in a release. An officer responded and shot Harden multiple times, Miles said.

Harden was wanted for being a non-registered sex offender. Officials also wanted to speak to him about a missing person case.

He was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he will be treated for his injuries.

In Forsyth, few details were available on an incident in which a man threatened deputies with a weapon, according to the Macon Telegraph.

Richard Treadwell, 40, was shot twice at a home on Johnstonville Road, the newspaper reported. He was taken to the hospital and his condition is not known.

Three deputies were there during the shooting. Their names have not been released.
