An Atlanta police officer is recovering after he and the man he was chasing were hit by a vehicle in northwest Atlanta on Sunday night.

The officer tried to intervene in a physical altercation between the man and a woman after he was flagged down in the 1700 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, police said. The confrontation happened just before 7:30 p.m.

He “got into a tussle” with the man, and the man tried to run across the street, according to police spokeswoman Officer TaSheena Brown.

“The officer gave chase and while doing so, both the officer and male were struck by a vehicle,” she said in a statement. “The male continued to run and was quickly apprehended by responding officers.”

Investigators later determined that the initial struggle was the result of an attempted robbery. The man, identified as 30-year-old Xavier Reeves, attempted to snatch money from the woman before the officer intervened, according to police.

Reeves and the officer were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries and later released. Reeves has since been arrested on a charge of robbery and was taken to the Fulton County Jail.

This isn’t his first time being booked into the county’s jail.

He’s been booked about two dozen times, according to online jail records. As of Monday night, his booking had not been completed.
