A 69-year-old man was killed Tuesday evening after getting struck by an off-duty Columbus police officer.

The fatal wreck occurred on Illges Road about 10:45 p.m. as the officer headed into work in his marked cruiser, the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reported. 

The man who was hit was taken to Piedmont Columbus Regional Hospital, where he later died, according to the newspaper. He was identified as Lester Holloway.

Police have not released the name of the officer involved in the fatal crash. The collision is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
