A burglary suspect was shot Wednesday evening after entering a man’s Bartow County home and attacking him, police said.

Deputies responded to Floral Drive, just north of Cartersville, shortly after 7 p.m after receiving 911 calls about a disturbance.

When they arrived, they discovered the homeowner, a man in his late 80s, had been assaulted with a board, Bartow County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Jonathan Rogers said.

The suspect had been shot several times by the man’s neighbors, who heard the commotion and rushed over to help, police said.

The burglary suspect was shot after trying to attack the man’s neighbors with a metal post, Rogers said Friday. He was held at the scene until deputies arrived.

The homeowner was flown to an Atlanta hospital, authorities said, though the extent of his injuries is unclear.

The home invasion suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to another hospital for treatment of his gunshot wounds and is expected to survive. He is charged with burglary, two counts of aggravated assault and one count of criminal trespass. Additional charges are likely, authorities said.

The neighbors who helped will not be charged.

“No names are being released at this time due to both the ongoing investigation and the nature of the injuries of the victim,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release, adding that more information will be released later.
