The victim was shot when he approached a person who was trying to break into his vehicle, which was parked on school property.

A person is stable after being shot Wednesday night outside Miller Grove High School near Lithonia, a district spokeswoman said.

The shooting occurred just after 7:30 p.m. as Miller Grove played host to Lithonia High School in a basketball game. However, DeKalb County School District spokeswoman Eileen Houston-Stewart said the shooting “was not related to the basketball game.”

The victim, who is not a student, was running around the school’s track as a workout when he saw someone trying to break into his vehicle, which was on school property, the district said. He confronted the person and was shot one time.

Police are looking for the shooter.

School district police on the scene put tourniquets on the victim before he was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

“Our DCSD Public Safety officers and detectives are investigating the alleged incident and interviewing witnesses,” the district said.
