A man who police say tried to rob a Buckhead jewelry store was shot and killed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The robbery and shooting investigation had Piedmont Road blocked after 4 p.m., police said.
The son of Cachet Fine Jewelry owner shot the would-be armed robber, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Atlanta police spokesman Major Adam Lee said the man visited the jewelry store Tuesday, pretending to be a customer.
“They kind of recognized him and were suspicious of him when they saw him the second time today,” Lee said of the store owners.
The man, who may have been in his 30s, told the jewelry store owners he was “looking to spend $70,000” in the store when he came in Tuesday, Atlanta police spokesman Officer Lukasz Sajdak said.
After the man pointed a gun at the father and demanded, “Put all the jewelry in the bag,” the son son fired three times, hitting the would-be robber at least once in the neck.
No customers were in the store and no other injuries were reported.
The suspect collapsed across the street and was pronounced dead at Grady Memorial Hospital, Sajdak said.
Witnesses told Channel 2 a woman was waiting in a getaway car outside.
