Ty'Ron Davis was killed Monday night at a student apartment complex at Clayton State University, shot twice and left bleeding in a breezeway.
Davis, 23, was not a student at the school, nor was he related to one, as was previously suggested by authorities. Why he was on campus — and what immediately preceded his death — remain unclear.
Regardless, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation wants answers.
“The agents have been running leads all night and throughout the day,” spokesman Scott Dutton said.
According to information released by the GBI and Clayton State, university police officers responded to the Clayton Station Apartments on N. Lake Drive at about 8:15 p.m. Monday after gunshots were reported. They found Davis lying in the breezeway of the 3000 building.
Initially described as being in “serious” condition, Davis was rushed to Southern Regional Medical Center. He died later that night, Dutton said Tuesday.
An autopsy conducted Tuesday morning discovered Brooks had been shot twice.
As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, no suspects had been publicly identified or apprehended. Neither the GBI nor Clayton State, whose police department was handling the initial investigation, have released details about the circumstances surrounding Davis’ death.
“The GBI is continuing to interview witnesses in the apartment complex, as well as interview friends and family of Davis,” Dutton said in a news release.
Earlier Tuesday, Clayton State spokeswoman Maritza Ferreira said investigators had “little information to go on.” She said a text alert urging students at the Morrow university to shelter in place was sent about 20 minutes after Davis was discovered.
“The safety of our students remains our highest concern and we are working closely with our students to provide additional resources such as grief counseling as we work through this troubling issue,” Ferreira said in an emailed statement.
“He was a loving, special child,” his mother, Arnetta Davis, told Channel 2 Action News. “Tyron lights the whole room up.”
His friend, Marvin Taylor, told Channel 2 that Brooks was the “greatest person on earth.”
Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact GBI Special Agent Jeff Hatchett at 770-388-5019. Tipsters can also submit information anonymously by calling 800-597-8477.
