A man who threatened to kill himself was shot by a Clayton County police officer after he ignored the officer’s orders and pulled out a weapon, authorities said.

The GBI, which is investigating the shooting, identified the man as Bruce Young Jr., 25, of College Park, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said Monday.

Officers responded Sunday night to a call about an armed man threatening suicide at the South Lake Cove apartments on Jonesboro Road, Clayton County police Sgt. Ashanti Marbury said.

"(Officers) challenged the subject and gave him verbal commands,” Maj. Brian Danekes told Channel 2 Action News. “At that time, the male subject brandished a weapon, at which time shots were fired."

Young was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is in stable condition, Miles said.

This is at least the third officer-involved shooting in metro Atlanta since Wednesday.

An Atlanta police officer shot and injured a man accused of firing at the cop after a carjacking and brief chase Wednesday.

Timothy Hood, 37, faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of hijacking a motor vehicle in connection with the incident, Atlanta police Sgt. John Chafee said.

Later that day, former jail worker Guy Scott Jr. was shot and killed in Spalding County after threatening suicide and pointing his gun at a deputy, the sheriff said.

The recent shootings brought the total number of officer-involved shootings in the state to 65 so far this year, according to the GBI, which investigates use-of-force cases.

In 2016, officers shot 77 people, killing 24 of them, the agency said.
