A man said he shot another man in the stomach after he was threatened with a knife and encountered racial slurs while sitting in traffic after a college football game Saturday.
Dontavious Chancy said he grabbed his gun and fired when he saw four men, one with a knife, rush toward his truck, Channel 2 Action News reported. The men also yelled racial slurs, he said, and called him a monkey.
“(They) tried to run me off the road,” he said. “(They sped) up behind me and started yelling.”
The men were sitting in traffic along Highway 138 in Walton County after the football game between Georgia and Georgia Tech in Athens when Chancy said one of the men got out of the car and swung at him. That’s when he pulled out his gun and shot the man.
Rockdale County Sheriff Eric Levett witnessed the incident and rushed to help the injured man.
Levett said Chancy fully cooperated after the incident, but described the other men as belligerent.
“You don’t escalate the situation by continuing to yell at everyone on scene,” Levett said. “It could have turned deadly, even bad for me.”
No one involved has been charged.
