A Chihuahua is recovering from its injuries after a Gainesville man allegedly shot the animal with an air rifle.

Pedro Javier Gallegos-Franco, 37, of Gainesville, faces animal cruelty and reckless conduct charges related to shooting the 10-pound dog, according to The Gainesville Times.

The incident happened Monday in the 3500 block of Casper Drive.

Hall County sheriff’s office spokesman Lt. Scott Ware told the newspaper Gallegos-Franco claimed self defense.

“The suspect claimed the dog tried to attack him,” Ware said. “There is no known evidence that this was the case.”

Gallegos-Franco was booked into the Hall County Jail, where he remained Tuesday.
