A North Georgia man was sentenced to two years behind bars for dragging a German shepherd behind his truck.
Jesus Sandoval, 45, of Dalton, entered a guilty plea Thursday to aggravated cruelty to animals, according to Conasauga Judicial Circuit District Attorney Bert Poston.
In March, a witness told police she flagged down Sandoval to alert him he was dragging the dog. When his response was to tighten the cable between the dog and the truck and continue driving, the witness called 911.
A Whitfield County Sheriff’s deputy followed a trail of blood to Sandoval’s residence, where he found the dog inside a fenced-in area, unable to stand.
Sandoval said he was trying to teach the dog to follow the truck, Poston said.
The dog has since fully recovered and has been adopted.
In addition to jail time in the Georgia State Penitentiary, Sandoval was sentenced to three years suspended on banishment from the Conasauga Judicial Circuit, which consists of Whitfield and Murray counties. However, it is expected that Sandoval, a citizen of Mexico, will be deported upon his release from prison.
