A pedestrian struck by a car in southwest Atlanta died at the hospital from an unknown cause after police said they were “not expecting him to die.”

Around 8 p.m. Saturday, a man was walking in the crosswalk at the intersection of Rogers Avenue and Cascade Road when a driver didn’t see him and hit him, Atlanta police told Channel 2 Action News.

The pedestrian suffered a broken leg, but he was otherwise alert, police said. However, he later died at a local hospital around 10:15 p.m.

The driver remained at the scene and was cited for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk. AJC.com has reached out to police to see if additional charges will be filed.
