A man was hit and killed on Interstate 285 as he tried to run from police, authorities said Wednesday.

About midnight, someone called 911 to report two men were trying to sell drugs at a Petro truck stop in the 3100 block of Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, Atlanta police Officer Kim Jones said.

When police arrived, one of the men ran.

“Officers pursued the suspect on foot out of the parking lot west on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway,” Jones said. “The male jumped over the metal guardrail and attempted to cross the northbound lanes of I-285.”

A vehicle hit the man, identified by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office as 29-year-old Demetrious Smith.

“He was then struck by at least one more vehicle,” Jones said.

Smith died on the scene. The other man reported in the 911 call has not been found, Jones said.

Both drivers remained in the area for questioning.
