A 54-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after he fatally stabbed his nephew.

James Cooper admitted to killing Ricky Hall, 38, but said it was an accident, according to a news release from the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. Cooper was found guilty of murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a crime.

In the April 2015 incident, Hall was visiting his grandmother’s house on his birthday when he asked her for bread. That’s when Cooper got angry and the two got into an argument, the release said.

Hall picked up Cooper and slammed him to the ground, according to the release. Hall helped Cooper back up and apologized.

But witnesses told police Cooper was still angry.

He grabbed a knife from the kitchen and stabbed Hall in the chest and head, the release said. Family members stopped Cooper as he tried to leave the scene.
