An Atlanta man was sentenced to life plus 70 years in prison for sodomizing a woman after she walked her child to school.

Demarcus West, 29, attacked the victim in her apartment Oct. 7, 2016, according to a statement issued Friday by Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard Jr.

Though she was gone only for five to 10 minutes, West was waiting for her when she returned to her apartment.

“West dragged the victim to the floor and repeatedly punched and kicked her in the face and head,” Howard said. “The victim attempted to fight back, but West strangled her until she almost lost consciousness while he ripped off her blouse and shorts.”

After about 20 minutes, the victim escaped and ran onto her balcony, where she frantically screamed for help, Howard said. A neighbor called 911, and during the call the victim’s screams can be heard in the background of the call.

West was identified through DNA that was left on the victim and was arrested Jan. 5, 2017.

He was convicted of attempt to commit rape, aggravated sodomy, sexual battery, aggravated assault and burglary.
