A Dunwoody man remains behind bars after stealing a delivery driver’s car from outside her Sandy Springs pizza shop last week, police said.
Officers responded to Gala’s Pizza on Mount Vernon Highway about 5:20 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call from an employee whose car was stolen when she returned to pick up another order, Sandy Springs police spokesman Sgt. Sal Ortega said.
According to police, the driver left her keys inside the 1996 Honda Accord and found it missing when she tried to leave with a delivery.
The suspected car thief, 35-year-old Joseph Meis, was arrested Friday morning after officers spotted him driving on Roswell Road near I-285, Ortega said.
Authorities set up surveillance outside a Target store on Roswell Road and Meis was arrested after returning to the car.
“Not only did he confess to stealing the vehicle, but surveillance video at the restaurant also corroborated that he was the same person that stole it the day before,” Ortega said.
The vehicle, which was not damaged, was quickly returned to the delivery driver, authorities said.
Meis was arrested on charges of theft by taking a motor vehicle, theft by receiving stolen property, open container and driving with a suspended license, records show. He also faces a drug charge after officers discovered heroin paraphernalia in his possession, Ortega said.
Fulton County jail records indicate Meis was granted a $13,000 signature bond, but he remained in custody Tuesday afternoon.
