The Troup County man allegedly shown on dashcam video shooting at a sheriff’s deputy — and taking a swig from a can after being shot himself — has been arrested, officials announced Wednesday.

Terry Lee Caldwell, 60, was arrested early Wednesday at the same LaGrange home outside of which he’s accused of exchanging gunfire with a Troup County deputy on June 29. He was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Troup County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Stewart Smith said.

Caldwell was being held at the Troup County jail but, according to Smith, had been granted a $15,000 bond.

Smith said Caldwell's arrest was delayed because he had been hospitalized since the incident, during which he was shot in the elbow and thigh by Deputy Stephen D'Angelo. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation previously released dashcam footage of the encounter, which appears to show Officer D'Angelo returning fire after Caldwell shoots first.

As the video begins, the man identified as Caldwell can be seen waving, pointing and screaming unintelligibly as he’s sitting in a lawnchair in his carport. D’Angelo, who had pulled into Caldwell’s driveway, can be heard asking Caldwell what he has in his hands, and then what he has in his lap.

Caldwell then bends over, grabs what authorities described as an “AK47-style pistol” from the ground and shoots twice. D’Angelo returns fire four times.

Caldwell, struck twice, sits back down in his chair. He takes a casual sip from a canned beverage.

“I need some help over here,” D’Angelo says into his radio. “Shots fired.”

D’Angelo was not injured in the shooting, which is being probed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Troup County is about 70 miles southwest of Atlanta, not far from the Alabama line.
