One man is in jail and another is in critical condition after an assault involving a baseball bat, police said.

The attack happened shortly before 7:15 p.m. Saturday near the DeVry University campus on the 100 block of East Court Square in Decatur, police said.

Witnesses told Decatur police that a man hit the injured man in the head with a baseball bat. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he is listed in critical condition, police said.

Witnesses gave officers a description of the man wielding the bat. Police said they later found the suspect, 43-year-old Jerry Dean Johnson Jr., in the 100 block of Clairemont Avenue.

Johnson tried to run, but police chased him, authorities said. He was captured in a parking deck, police said.

Johnson and the injured man know each other, authorities said. The details of what prompted the attack are not clear.

Johnson was booked into the DeKalb County jail late Saturday evening on an aggravated assault charge, jail records show.
