‘I’m scared’: Woman plans to move after being shot in back at DeKalb apartment

Oumou Keita once fled her home in Guinea due to violence in the West African country. Now, she finds herself again fleeing violence — after being shot in her DeKalb County apartment Tuesday night.
Keita was standing in the living room of her apartment at the Lakes at Indian Creek complex when a bullet crashed through the window and hit her in the back, DeKalb police said. She is recovering after being released from the hospital.
She told Channel 2 Action News that she heard gunfire ring out from outside the apartment just before her legs gave out from the force of the bullet.
“I fell to the ground,” she said. “I told my husband, ‘They shot me.’”

Police have not made any arrests in the case. Investigators are working to determine whether the shooting was in fact a result of random gunfire, DeKalb police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer said.
Keita told Channel 2 that she moved into the apartment three years ago, but does not feel it is safe enough for her and her family to stay there anymore and plans to move.
“I’m scared,” she said, “because I don’t want it to happen again.”
The management of the apartment complex said they plan to hire security by January, Channel 2 reported.
