Georgia State University police have identified a 17-year-old as a suspect in the recent robbery of a student, authorities said Friday.

Tyrell Curry is wanted on charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon in connection with the Oct. 10 incident on Collins Street near the campus library. He is still at large.

Student Paul Nkengasong said he was approached just before midnight by two men wearing hooded sweatshirts and masks who took his bookbag at gunpoint.

“The guy with the gun cocks the gun in my face, and that’s when I let go of the bag,” Nkengasong told Channel 2 Action News. “After that, they ask me to empty my pockets, and I grab my wallet and keys and throw them on the ground and run toward the library.”

He was not injured in the incident, which was one of two involving Georgia State students that night. In the other, two women said they were approached outside the law school on the corner of John Wesley Dobbs Avenue and Park Place.

They told police a man attempted to rob them, snatched at one woman’s hair and fired a gun.

The two incidents occurred within an hour of each other, but campus police have determined they are not related. No other suspects have been identified.

After the Oct. 10 robberies and another recent robbery at a student parking lot, police Chief Joseph Spillane told AJC.com he was authorizing overtime and increasing evening patrols.

“We're an urban campus right in the middle of downtown Atlanta, so it’s bound to happen occasionally, but we just want to make sure it doesn’t become anything of a norm,” he said of the recent spike in crime.

Authorities are asking anyone who might recognize Curry to contact Crime Stoppers Atlanta. He should be considered armed and dangerous.

Tipsters can remain anonymous, and be eligible for rewards of up to $2,000, by contacting Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-8477, texting information to 274637 or visiting the Crime Stoppers website.
