A man’s body was recovered from the Chattahoochee River near Helen on Friday, the GBI confirmed.

He was identified as Gary Phillip Freeman Jr., 42, of Troy, Ala., and he appeared to be visiting Helen, according to a GBI news release.

Helen police found the body in the river near Brucken Strasse after a tourist called the White County 911 Center on Friday morning around 10:30 a.m., the release said.

The GBI said Monday that preliminary autopsy results indicate drowning as the cause of death, but spokeswoman Nelly Miles said “additional testing is required for a final ruling.”
