Four people were detained, three were hospitalized and a Henry County elementary school was placed on lockdown Tuesday afternoon following what police called a road-rage collision and shooting.

Stockbridge Elementary was placed on a “soft lockdown” after a head-on collision with injuries and reports of shots fired in the 100 block of nearby Club Circle about 3:45 p.m., police said.

Homeowners reported hearing gunshots after the crash and shell casings were recovered from the scene, Henry County police Capt. Joey Smith said. Police could not confirm if anyone was struck by the gunfire and it’s unclear what led to the “dispute” between the vehicles’ occupants.

The precautionary lockdown meant no one could go in or out of the school, but students and staff were able to move freely within the building, district officials said. The lockdown was lifted shortly after 5 p.m., a district spokesman said.

Authorities said four people are in police custody and three others were taken to area hospitals for injuries related to the collision. Police have not released the names of those involved.

“There are no confirmed gunshot victims and detectives will determine what charges or warrants may be obtained on those involved in this incident,” Smith said.
