A home health care worker was arrested after officials said she stole nearly $5,000 from her 88-year-old client.

Keera Paige Carlton, 21, of Gainesville, turned herself in at the Hall County Jail on Monday afternoon, according to sheriff’s office spokesman Derreck Booth.

Hall authorities said Carlton took the victim’s checkbook and wrote three checks to herself that totaled $4,650.

Detectives opened an investigation Sept. 21 after a man with power of attorney for the 88-year-old noticed the money was missing, Booth said. Investigators obtained warrants for Carlton’s arrest three days later.

She was booked into the county jail on a charge of financial exploitation of an elderly person. She was later released on bond.

An investigation is ongoing.
