Gwinnett County police have filed murder charges in a case that was originally reported as a suicide.

Liubov Volkova, 35, was arrested Friday in connection with the death of her husband, 38-year-old Jordan Whitson, Gwinnett police Cpl. Michele Pihera said Wednesday.

Volkova reported the death as a suicide on Nov. 1, 2015, Pihera said. Officers arrived at a home on Hampton Park Drive in Buford about 1:39 p.m. and were greeted at the door by Volkova, according to an incident report.

Volkova told officers her husband shot himself in the cheek. They found Whitson’s body on the stairs and took it to the Gwinnett Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, Pihera said.

“Based on information learned during the investigation along with the results from the Medical Examiner’s Office,” Pihera said, “Volkova was indicted” on a murder charge.

She was being held Wednesday at the Gwinnett jail without bond.
