A Central Gwinnett High School student was arrested Tuesday after administrators discovered he had a gun on campus, authorities said.

School officials searched the student’s belongings after receiving a tip from multiple students that he had a weapon, Principal Shane Orr wrote in a letter to parents.

“We moved quickly to investigate and during our search, we did find that the student we received the tip about had a gun in his possession,” he said. “In addition to criminal charges for having a weapon on campus, this student also will face disciplinary action.”

Orr said in his letter that he knows the news is troubling to parents, but assured them the incident was handled “quickly and efficiently.”

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students who came forward to report their concerns,” he said. “In today’s world it is critical that we all step up and say something ... Clearly, we all have a role to play when it comes to school safety.”

The student’s name has not been released because he is a juvenile, a school district spokeswoman said.
