A Griffin High School teacher has been arrested and charged with raping and molesting a young relative, police said.

Griffin police Lt. Mike Richardson said a girl related to 51-year-old Stephen Chapman reported the alleged incidents to police on Thursday, and after an investigation, Chapman was arrested Friday afternoon.

“The alleged acts occurred in Griffin and on more than one occasion,” Richardson said.

A spokeswoman for Griffin-Spalding County Schools told Channel 2 Action News Chapman taught math in the system for two years prior to his arrest. The system had no idea he was under investigation until officers showed up at Chapman’s school. None of the alleged incidents took place in the schools, the spokeswoman said.

Chapman is being held in the Spalding County Jail on charges of aggravated child molestation, aggravated sexual battery, aggravated sodomy and rape.

Richardson said investigators are trying to determine if there are any other victims, and asked that anyone with information call Sgt. Karen Yancey at 770-229-6450.
