A Loganville woman has been sentenced to 16 months in prison in California for an impersonation scam.

Ashley Marie Walker, 28, targeted elderly people by pretending to be a Los Angeles County deputy, according to a news release from the sheriff's department.

She and Nicolas Brady Kennedy, 29, another Loganville resident, told victims over the phone that they had warrants out for their arrests by the sheriff's office but could pay their fines using gift cards, the release said. They allegedly collected around $16,000 from six victims.

Authorities said Walker and Brady operated the scam in early 2019 before destroying evidence.

Walker was arrested in Loganville in October and extradited to the Los Angeles County Jail. She was convicted of attempted extortion and accessory after the fact and sentenced Jan. 15.

Kennedy, who is in jail in Georgia on a probation violation, will be extradited to Los Angeles County to face extortion charges when he is released.
