A Georgia man was sentenced Monday to life behind bars for the 2016 murder of a retired New York police officer in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

A jury found Augusta native Johnathan Hillary, 32, guilty of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery and a weapons charge after he killed former police Officer Timothy Buckley in a robbery attempt gone wrong Sept. 16, 2016, according to the Riverhead News-Review. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Police said Hillary and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Bernithia Young, tried to rob Buckley after spotting him at a bar, but when the victim ran, Hillary shot him in the back and the head. Hillary then dumped Buckley’s body in a nearby forest, where it remained until it was found a month later.

Young, who was charged as an accessory, is still awaiting trial and may face additional charges, the newspaper said.
