A Madison County man is alleged to have stolen a portable sawmill valued at $50,000, according to a Jackson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Mark Anthony Dow, 42, of Danielsville, is charged with felony theft by receiving, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Authorities said that the sawmill, which contained a GPS tracking device, was traced to Dow’s home soon after it was stolen in June from Travelers Rest, S.C.

Dow denied knowledge of the machine, but evidence appeared to contradict that statement. Deputies said they saw two new sawmill blades in the bed of his truck, an investigator obtained a photograph of the tool being towed by Dow’s vehicle on I-85, and a witness said Dow told a neighbor he was “going into the sawmill business,” according to the report.

A Jackson County deputy located the sawmill at a Barrow County home. It has since been returned to its South Carolina owner.
