A man is in critical condition after a Fulton County police officer shot him when he refused to drop a weapon, the GBI said.

About 8:30 p.m. Thursday, officers responded to a fight in the 1900 block of Waycrest Drive at the Panther Riverside Parc apartment homes.

“The initial GBI investigation revealed that the subject did not live at the apartment complex and had attacked a resident of the apartment complex,” GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said. “The victim of the attack and the subject did not know one another.”

The officer “encountered the aggressor of the fight” and ordered him to drop the weapon, she said. Those commands were ignored, prompting the officer to shoot.

That’s when the “officer fired his weapon, striking the subject several times,” Miles said.

The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital.

The GBI did not specify the type of weapon the man had or release any other details about the case.

“The GBI is in the early stages of this investigation,” Miles said.

In January and February alone, the GBI conducted 17 officer-involved shooting investigations in Georgia, she said. The GBI investigated 78 officer-involved shootings in the state last year.
