A nurse practitioner was arrested after officials say she illegally accessed patient prescription information from a database, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Nina Coleman Leonard, 62, was arrested Thursday after GBI officials say she researched two former employees’ prescription drug history on the Prescription Drug and Monitoring Program (PDMP) and sent it to a third party.

Leonard is a licensed nurse practitioner and the Director of Nursing and Allied Health Professionals for LightHorse Healthcare, Inc. in St. Marys, according to a release from the GBI. St.Marys is roughly 340 miles from Atlanta.

Leonard was authorized to access the PDMP database, but her queries did not fall within proper use of the database, according to the release.

The GBI looked into the allegations after the Georgia Drugs and Narcotics Agency (GDNA) requested an investigation. GDNA maintains the PDMP database.

Leonard’s arrest is the first in Georgia.

Before 2013, mishandling information from the PDMP database wasn’t against the law, according to the release. That changed when GDNA worked with legislators to better secure sensitive prescription information.

Leonard was booked into the Camden County Jail, but was released on bond Friday.
