A south Georgia man was arrested by the GBI this week for allegedly stealing more than $17,000 from a GoFundMe account set up to raise money for the family of a deceased police officer.

According to the GBI, David Hans Smith, 43, established the online account to raise money for the family of Pelham police Officer John Mucci, who died of natural causes on April 3.

“However, Smith diverted over $17,000 for his personal use,” the GBI said in a statement. “None of the donated money was ever given to Mucci’s family.”

Smith was arrested Wednesday in Leesburg and charged with theft by taking.
