A 45-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Friday night in Cherokee County, the GBI said late Saturday.

About 9:15 p.m., a Woodstock police officer responded to a suspicious person call in the parking lot of the Walmart located on Ga. 92 and Trickum Road, GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

At some point, the officer shot the suspect, identified Saturday as Dennis Doty. He was taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he died. It is not clear why the officer, who was not injured, shot Doty.

"No further details will be released as this is an ongoing investigation," Lang said.

When the investigation is finished, she said, the case will be turned over to the district attorney.
