A Middle Georgia man has been charged with arson for allegedly setting his car on fire near Eastman.

A Middle Georgia man arrested Monday is accused of setting a car on fire that had his girlfriend inside, authorities confirmed.

Doug Sheriff, 48, of Eastman, is charged with one count of arson, the GBI said in a news release.

On Saturday morning, a white BMW belonging to Sheriff was found under the Gum Swamp Creek Bridge near Ga. 117 in Dodge County, the release said. Passing drivers smelled a burned odor and notified authorities.

Inside the burned car were the remains of Michelle Bazemore, 50, the release said.

The cause of Bazemore’s death is being investigated by the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office, the state Fire Marshals Office and the GBI.

Sheriff was detained Saturday at the GBI office in Eastman and has since been transported to the Dodge County jail, the release said.
