The board of directors of Adult Literacy Barrow has fired its executive director after his arrest on a charge of felony theft by taking, the Athens Banner-Herald reported.

Robert Ronald Saunders, a former superintendent of the Barrow County School System, also has been charged with fourth-degree forgery, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

The board members told a Barrow sheriff’s deputy they suspected Saunders of forging their signatures on checks and cashing them, the sheriff’s office said.

Adult Literacy Barrow offers GED programs and education opportunities through Lanier Technical College.
