A former DeKalb County police officer bought drugs from a fellow cop while on the job, police told Channel 2 Action News.

Police say Evan McWhite bought drugs from officer Vancito Gumbs, who was indicted in May as part of the Gangster Disciples crime ring. It is believed Gumbs killed people as a hitman for the gang.

McWhite resigned in July amid the allegations.

“In any profession, you’re going to have individuals that are going to go off the rails,” DeKalb Public Safety Director Cedric Alexander told Channel 2.” “Certainly it’s disappointing any time you have a sworn police officer arrested.”

According to an affidavit, McWhite bought a gram of cocaine from Gumbs outside a gas station for $40 while on duty, Channel 2 reported. Federal agents told DeKalb police about the drug deal after going through text messages in Gumbs’ phone.

“When you have something like this occur, it certainly does hurt the entire agency,” Alexander said.

Despite the arrests, Alexander told Channel 2 he doesn’t think any others are connected to illegal drug activity.

“I can very confidently say to this community at this very moment we have no reason to believe others are involved,” Alexander said.
